I have a new favorite restaurant. Isn’t that how I start a lot of these posts? Well, what can I say? Eating in NYC is nothing but impressive and fun all the time. Except not all of the time. 95% of the time. So here I bring you to my new favorite restaurant in Park Slope: Alchemy. I also bring you my sister, Alexandra, for the upteenth time, but that’s what happens when I have a visitor as fabulous as she. Plus I love her hair. So I’ll keep posting pictures of it.
Anyway, Alchemy. I went there for the first time last week with my friend Mara and had their amazing, amazing shells and cheese. Mara had the burger which was also fabulous since, like me, likes to share. We sat outside in this beautiful backyard and I had just charged my camera and somehow forgotten my memory card! Bummer!
So now you are getting indoor pictures instead, because it was hot as Hades. It was also brunch.

Yogurt, granola, and fruit for Val.

Eggs Bennie for me. And of course Alexandra had their brilliant burger. You know, I really like Park Slope. And I really like Alchemy.

Have you ever had Ethopian food? Do you like it? Does it make you want to visit Ethiopia? Does it make you feel one with the earth? I think I’d rather use a fork.
We went to Bati this week for my friend Laura’s birthday. She loves Ethiopian food so 11 of us went to her fave spot in Fort Greene. We chose meat and vegetarian combination platters. I was kind of stuck in my spot so I had Laura take this picture of the veggie combo for me:

The meat combo looked sort of the same. Different piles of sloppy stuff in all kinds of colors and consistencies. Underneath everything is a strange sort of rubbery bread that you tear off and use to scoop up the veggies or meat. Some things were really spicy. We all drank a lot of water.

I love group dining. We had some hilarious conversation which I will spare you of here. But I don’t know, I don’t really get the food. Everyone was talking about how great it was and how “satisfying” it was but at the end of the meal, all I wanted was a hamburger! I’m glad I tried it and it is fun and I’d happily go again… but only if it’s Laura’s birthday. :)

It’s not every day you get to pretend that you’re hatching out of an egg. Or you’re turtle:

Or a prairie dog:

Or you get to play kissy with farm animals:

Prospect Park Zoo may be small, but it is good. Lots of birds and monkeys. We saw mommy and baby wallabies. And these guys:

Sea lions! We saw a feeding and they did tricks for us and there were barely any people there so you could see everything. They were so cute! All the zoo is missing is some penguins and they would be set.
Yeah, yeah, so no munchies on this City Mitten post, but don’t you worry because this weekend was packed. And HOT! I made the mistake of randomly walking across the Brooklyn Bridge after brunch one day and now I’m red, red, red. Stay tuned, because I assure you tomorrow will be delicious.

OMG, I love the summer. Not only do I feel like I’ve been on fifteen different rooftops in the past two weeks, I also feel like I can’t stop having fun! I even tried to lay low this week, but fun still finds me. Look at this girl. She is all over my blog ALL THE TIME! I’m about to rename this thing Missy Mitten. Missy, you are cut off for a week. Oh wait, we already have two things planned this weekend, one of which is a CANDY TOUR and she’s the guide! So I guess I can’t help it, she’s my most willing partner in crime. There she is with a Salty Pimp (vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche, sea salt, chocolate dip) that she couldn’t wait for me to take a picture of before she took a bite. Oops!
We stopped by the good ol’ Big Gay Ice Cream Truck last night before heading to Park Slope for a show:

There’s my homeboy, Doug Quint. He’s out there fighting for food truck rights (there is this crazy bill that would shut down trucks if they had two parking tickets in one year – two!!) and he’s out there bringing you the best gay ice cream you ever did see. Unfortunately, our trip there was completely impromptu and I had just had half a milkshake (Shake Shack, what?) so I’m going to have to bring myself over there again sometime soon. Doug is my homeboy cause I interviewed him when I was an intern for Gothamist, which I don’t think I shared before because I wasn’t sure if I wanted my full name on City Mitten… pff! He’s also my homeboy on Twitter. If you haven’t yet checked him out you should A) be embarrassed and B) get on it, he’s usually at 17th st and Broadway.
Our visit was right before this awesome show at Southpaw by Frontier Ruckus, who is getting a City Mitten shoutout today because they are A) really good and B) from Michigan:

I like going to Southpaw because there are so many attractive boys but I don’t like going to Southpaw because half of them look like guys I have already dated. One in particular last night looked exactly like the last guy I actually dated and it was driving me nuts! Even Missy was like, “Um, that guy kinda looks like…” GAH! Doppelganger, go away! But when that wasn’t distracting me, I was jammin’ along with the Michigan boys on the banjo. At the end of their set, they came in front of the mics and did a little ditty while half of the crowd sat down on the floor, like kindergarten kiddies watching a teacher read to them from a picture book. It was so cute and you can sort of tell from this blurry picture:

Things are happening. Life is good. It’s the weekend. Go see the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck and support your other local food trucks too!

Welcome to Roberta’s: Grimaldi’s for hipsters. Delicious. Roberta’s has nothing to do with Grimaldi’s except that it’s exactly like it. The same fantastically droopy pizza, the same glorious cheese. Oh my. I am so glad for this. No wonder everyone likes Roberta’s so much.

Roberta’s is for hipsters because it’s in Bushwick and because when we ate there, we saw people with red X’s painted on their faces. No idea why. We also made the observation that in Brooklyn, you can wear anything. Even if it looks like pajamas. We also saw Julianne Moore and her kids. It’s been a starstruck week. I saw Agyness Deyn earlier this week too and Missy had seen Andrew Keagan.
So Roberta’s is really good. We got a margherita and an RPS with tomato, mozzarella, sopressata, and roasted red peppers. I also had a glass of wine. Mmm. It was right after we watched the US/England World Cup game and it was exactly what we needed. My only complaint is that at the end of the meal, the server asked, “Can I get you anything else?” Uh yeah, the dessert menu. I like it better when they just bring it or at least ask if we want to look at it, instead of making me feel like you want me to leave. So we didn’t ask for it.
Inside Roberta’s is super cute, too. It’s a good date place, too, methinks. Which is why I went with Missy Kayko. ;)

Hello! And Happy Monday! Some weekends are just so fantastic that you can’t stop thinking about how fantastic everything is.
Like these cookies from Momofuku Milk Bar and Bakery!

I usually don’t care a lot about cookies. At all. Unless they’re straight out of the oven, I’m just not interested. Until now.
I always think about my friend Michelle and how she likes cookies and wants me to go to more cookie places so I was going to go to Paradis for their AMAZING chocolate chip cookies (that I care about even if not straight out of the oven) and get those for the brunch party a bunch of my friends had on Sunday, but Paradis is closed on Sundays so it was off to plan B. I’ve heard people talk about Momofuku cookies and I’ve seen them given as a birthday present (on Friday, actually), but I’ve never been motivated to try them out. I mean why would I go to Momofuku Milk Bar and not get their awesome soft serve with some funky topping? Or an entire chocolate chip cake? But soft serve doesn’t transport well and I wasn’t shelling out for an entire cake, so cookies were the way to go. Let’s talk about them now. I got three kinds: Compost – which has pretzels, chocolate chips, coffee, oats, butterscotch and potato chips; Chocolate-Chocolate cookies, which really need no explanation (besides the fact they’re almost like brownies); and Blueberry Cream cookies with dried blueberries and milk crumbs.
My world has changed. Never will I think of cookies the same way. Compost cookies are fantabulous, Blueberry Cream are SO fantabulous, and Chocolate-Chocolate is KILLER. They were all soft and gooey and everyone at the party had four heart attacks each when they tried them. So now you know.
Besides these awesome cookies at the brunch, let’s hear it for these awesome people:

And that wasn’t even everyone. Other people came and went throughout the day but this is everyone who was there when we decided we needed a cheesey family photo. It was a “New to NYC Brunch” because a lot of people have moved here recently or have internships here for the summer. I’ve been here for three years so was put on a panel with a Q & A format. Just kidding.
There was sooo much food at the brunch: cheese poppers, guacamole, watermelon, apple pie, quiche, biscotti, etc. Of course we had mimosas and there was also a waffle station!

This is how Missy makes a waffle. We also went on the roof:

I love brunch and I always think of it in terms of “let’s go to brunch” versus “let’s make brunch” so it’s cool to have people in my life who make me change it up, even if my contribution to “making” brunch was bringing Momofuku cookies. I doubt anyone would complain. ;)

Another non-food post from City Mitten! For two reasons 1) I feel like I haven’t eaten out somewhere decent in weeks (obviously this is not true). 2) I went to Prospect Park tonight after work with Missy and Chad and it was fabulous. Everything we do together just confirms to us that we should all be here. Or everything we just do period. All I can say is that if you’ve ever thought about moving to NYC, you need to stop thinking about it and just do it. You only live once.

I realize it’s not exactly summer yet, but looking at these pictures makes me feel like it is!
Rooftops are fun. I don’t have one, but Missy does. So does my friend Lucy. Rooftops are the bomb. So after our adventures to DuMont the other day, we went to Missy’s pad back in Bushwick and chilled on top of the sky. There we are looking at a book about social media. For realz. And this is us taking a break:

And here is the big rooftop with the big sky with the big Manhattan in the background:

Later that day in Manhattan I saw this:

And got this:

Looks like summer to me!

Missy and I made it back to DuMont! And she was actually able to stay this time! Fabulouso. I think DuMont is becoming one of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn. I mean I LOVE their outdoor patio. So much fun. If I lived in Williamsburg, I would be there every weekend. And then some.

Here is the famous DuMont burger. People swear by it. It’s good, but I’m still partial to the Shake Shack and Paul’s. Mmm. I did enjoy that it came with a plethora of pickles. Hamburger dills already on the burger and regular dill slices on the side. Good to know DuMont respects the pickle. As you should. I would probably recommend DuMont’s mac and cheese over their burger as I think it may be the best in NYC (or at least top three) but it’s not available on their brunch menu, which is when Missy and I went. They do give you these for brunch:

Mini donuts! They were warm, too! Cuteness.
Also I would highly recommend Missy’s sandwich:

There were artichokes and feta and that’s all you need to know.

If I just left this post as just that photo, I think we would be set. Have you ever seen something more beautiful? Yesterday, Miss Kelly Purkey asked what Nora and I ate when we went to the Brooklyn Flea last weekend and I am sad to say: not much. Brooklyn Flea has a million gazillion amazing food vendors that I need to go back and check out because this time we did not. But I am happy to say that I finally had my first People’s Pop!
Iearned of them on Twitter (duh) and after an entire year of faithful following, I claimed my reward.

At the Flea, they’ve just got a little spot, and they’ve also recently set up shop at the Chelsea Market, which I need to visit. Look at all those wise ladies in line for People’s Pops. It’s the perfect snack for when you’re walking around looking at tables like this:

I saw a really awesome unicorn necklace that I should have bought. Maybe it will still be there waiting for me. But back to my People’s Pops!

Nora had a raspberry mint pop (top picture) and I had a plum, yogurt, and tarragon. I loved it.

Obviously. Have a good weekend!
