Alchemy

July 21, 2010 · 5 Comments

I have a new favorite restaurant. Isn’t that how I start a lot of these posts? Well, what can I say? Eating in NYC is nothing but impressive and fun all the time. Except not all of the time. 95% of the time. So here I bring you to my new favorite restaurant in Park Slope: Alchemy. I also bring you my sister, Alexandra, for the upteenth time, but that’s what happens when I have a visitor as fabulous as she. Plus I love her hair. So I’ll keep posting pictures of it.

Anyway, Alchemy. I went there for the first time last week with my friend Mara and had their amazing, amazing shells and cheese. Mara had the burger which was also fabulous since, like me, likes to share. We sat outside in this beautiful backyard and I had just charged my camera and somehow forgotten my memory card! Bummer!

So now you are getting indoor pictures instead, because it was hot as Hades. It was also brunch.

Yogurt, granola, and fruit for Val.

Eggs Bennie for me. And of course Alexandra had their brilliant burger. You know, I really like Park Slope. And I really like Alchemy.

Breadbox: LIC

June 30, 2010 · 3 Comments

I love eggs benedict. I even like them when they are called “bagels benedict” because they are served on a bagel. I love homefries. I love brunch.

For any of those who know me in real life, or have been reading this here blog for a substantial period of time, you should know that I spend wayy too much time in an area called Long Island City, in Queens, because my two best boys live there. This past weekend was my third weekend in a row going there and sometimes I think if I was smart, I’d just move there, but I’m a Brooklyn girl at heart and home. Not to mention I’d like to keep Grand Central Station out of my daily commute.

Anyway, this is Kaitlin. She’s awesome and she’s lucky enough to live in P’s building. She also took us to brunch on at this new restaurant called Breadbox, which used to be an auto garage and is still smack dab next to a gas station:

P got salmon benedict and also this oatmeal which he says he put syrup on.

Really?

Breadbox was fun. The service was off. The food was good. I’d give it another shot except that for how much time I’ve spent in LIC, it’s amazing how little of their restaurants I’ve actually been to. Next!

Brunch Party: Bushwick

June 7, 2010 · 5 Comments

Hello! And Happy Monday! Some weekends are just so fantastic that you can’t stop thinking about how fantastic everything is.

Like these cookies from Momofuku Milk Bar and Bakery!

I usually don’t care a lot about cookies. At all. Unless they’re straight out of the oven, I’m just not interested. Until now.

I always think about my friend Michelle and how she likes cookies and wants me to go to more cookie places so I was going to go to Paradis for their AMAZING chocolate chip cookies (that I care about even if not straight out of the oven) and get those for the brunch party a bunch of my friends had on Sunday, but Paradis is closed on Sundays so it was off to plan B. I’ve heard people talk about Momofuku cookies and I’ve seen them given as a birthday present (on Friday, actually), but I’ve never been motivated to try them out. I mean why would I go to Momofuku Milk Bar and not get their awesome soft serve with some funky topping? Or an entire chocolate chip cake? But soft serve doesn’t transport well and I wasn’t shelling out for an entire cake, so cookies were the way to go. Let’s talk about them now. I got three kinds: Compost – which has pretzels, chocolate chips, coffee, oats, butterscotch and potato chips; Chocolate-Chocolate cookies, which really need no explanation (besides the fact they’re almost like brownies); and Blueberry Cream cookies with dried blueberries and milk crumbs.

My world has changed. Never will I think of cookies the same way. Compost cookies are fantabulous, Blueberry Cream are SO fantabulous, and Chocolate-Chocolate is KILLER. They were all soft and gooey and everyone at the party had four heart attacks each when they tried them. So now you know.

Besides these awesome cookies at the brunch, let’s hear it for these awesome people:

And that wasn’t even everyone. Other people came and went throughout the day but this is everyone who was there when we decided we needed a cheesey family photo. It was a “New to NYC Brunch” because a lot of people have moved here recently or have internships here for the summer. I’ve been here for three years so was put on a panel with a Q & A format. Just kidding.

There was sooo much food at the brunch: cheese poppers, guacamole, watermelon, apple pie, quiche, biscotti, etc. Of course we had mimosas and there was also a waffle station!

This is how Missy makes a waffle. We also went on the roof:

I love brunch and I always think of it in terms of “let’s go to brunch” versus “let’s make brunch” so it’s cool to have people in my life who make me change it up, even if my contribution to “making” brunch was bringing Momofuku cookies. I doubt anyone would complain. ;)

Brunch at La Taza: Charlottesville

June 1, 2010 · 1 Comment

Nothing is more torturesome than the pictures I take of brunch and I know I’ve declared that before. I think it’s pancakes that kill me the most. These pancakes were perfect. Not too thick. Not too dry. Perfect. La Taza Coffee House, you have won me over. And I have forgiven you for not posting your brunch menu online. Also beautiful was the Gautemalan:

Beans, eggs, tortillas, and plaintains. Legit Guatemalan. Also legit: eating outside with my friend Lucy’s old friends. And this super cool mailbox we found down the street:

And one more pictures of the pancakes for the road:

My goodness. Virginia was fun and we started things right.

DuMont (round two!)

May 20, 2010 · 3 Comments

Missy and I made it back to DuMont! And she was actually able to stay this time! Fabulouso. I think DuMont is becoming one of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn. I mean I LOVE their outdoor patio. So much fun. If I lived in Williamsburg, I would be there every weekend. And then some.

Here is the famous DuMont burger. People swear by it. It’s good, but I’m still partial to the Shake Shack and Paul’s. Mmm. I did enjoy that it came with a plethora of pickles. Hamburger dills already on the burger and regular dill slices on the side. Good to know DuMont respects the pickle. As you should.  I would probably recommend DuMont’s mac and cheese over their burger as I think it may be the best in NYC (or at least top three) but it’s not available on their brunch menu, which is when Missy and I went. They do give you these for brunch:

Mini donuts! They were warm, too! Cuteness.

Also I would highly recommend Missy’s sandwich:

There were artichokes and feta and that’s all you need to know.

Cafe Lafayette – Fort Greene

May 13, 2010 · 6 Comments

I have a new favorite neighborhood in Brooklyn. And it’s called Fort Greene. I don’t know whyyyy it has taken so long for me to go to Fort Greene, it’s not even far from my apartment! And it’s legit! Dekalb Ave is restaurant after restaurant and store after store and Fort Greene is also the home of the Brooklyn Flea on Saturdays! Norabear and I went on Saturday to check out the flea and we decided to pick a random spot to brunch at on the way, which is how we ended up at Cafe Lafayette aka Cutesville.

We sat outside and the whole time I kept telling Nora that I couldn’t believe this is what Fort Greene is. I had no idea! It is awesome. And so was the french toast:

It came in little slivers that were perfect to pick up with your hands and dip in the strawberry sauce. Don’t judge me.

Also, this french toast was under $10. The last time I had french toast that was under $10 is when I made it for myself. Dang.

Nora’s order was a little strange:

A side of mashed potatoes and a salad with goat cheese. Don’t judge her.

I love Fort Greene and I intend to spend a lot more time there now that I know how Awesomeville it is.

Cowgirl Seahorse (and goodbye Germans!)

April 9, 2010 · 7 Comments

Well this is my last post with the Germans. :( So sad! On their last day here we went to Battery Park and took the Staten Island Ferry to go by the Statue of Liberty before heading to the South Street Seaport. So where did I take them for lunch? Cowgirl Seahorse, of course!

Since I love love Cowgirl, I’ve been curious about their sister restaurant, Seahorse at the South Street Seaport but I never knew where it was (not to mention my only reason to go to the Seaport used to be the New Amsterdam Market, which hasn’t started back up again). So imagine my surprise  a couple weeks ago when someone texts me saying he thinks he’s found his new bar and it’s Seahorse! Time for me to check it out. This time with the Germans would be my second time there. The first, I had a bite of the chicken fried chicken and was utterly confused as to why I’ve never bothered to try that before.

BUT ANYWAY.

Here’s some of the boys looking at their beers:

Matti went for the Red Stripe and Didi tried to figure out what Dos Equis stood for (ha!). Rremember how Matti is always the winner when it comes to eating? He did not disappoint as both of these dishes were for him:

Blueberry pancakes.

Grilled fish Reuben. Yep! White fish, melted cheese, sauerkraut on 1000 acre dressing (not sure if that’s different than 1000 island but I’ll go with it.) This was a treat because Matti let me try it. Actually he shared his pancakes with everyone too. I, of course, got my favorite salad but his Reuben was gooood!

So if you’re ever in the Seaport, Seahorse is where you need to go. Seriously.

And the next day the Germans had to say goodbye, so goodbye Germans! Hope to see you soon!

:)

Easter Sunday: Family at Frank

April 5, 2010 · 8 Comments

Happy Easter! Okay, that was yesterday, but all the same. So my Easter was great. Despite the fact that the Germans left me (lots more posts on their time here coming up!).

Easter is about a lot of things. Jesus, who rose on the third day. Peeps, which are made of sugar. And family, which is love. Family! So how nice was it for me to be able to spend my Easter with my aunt and uncle and some of my favorite cousins? Yeah, that’s right, other cousins: be jealous. Oh, and let’s not forget I got to spend it with cousin’s boyfriend, too. :)

We went to Frank which is kind of lovely. Here’s cousin Michelle with Auntie Joyce:

Unfortunately, Auntie Joyce was a little too absorbed in the ordering decisions to smile for this one. But Michelle is smiling pretty so I had to post it.

BTW I wanted to tell you that I always thought this restaurant was called “A Place to Eat” because of the sign that says that out front (and of which I mistakenly forgot to take a picture of) so no wonder I could never find it on Google! It’s called Frank!

Anyway, we got lots of food. Some highlights:

A tomato/mozzarella appetizer with mozzarella served a way I have definitely never seen before. As you can see it’s extremely gooey. And extremely good. Getting this again.

Gnocchi:

This was truly good. As well as the chicken and mashed potatoes. I love mashed potatoes:

And here is some of our table, crumbs and all:

Please note the lasagne verdi in front of me, for which there was only ONE left when we got there so of course I ordered it and of course everybody stole it from me. But I didn’t mind because I stole food from everyone else too. We’re a sharing and caring family. And my Uncle Doug wants everyone to know that although he typically doesn’t like lasagne, he thought this lasagne was the Best Ever. Probably because it was. So there you have it.

Basically this was a fabulous Easter because I got to spend it with some family and hear how they were doing as well as update them on new developments. After brunch, we went to Butterlane and I saw Anderson Cooper on our way there! Then we trolled around Tompkins Square Park with the baybeee. Then I met up with my lovely Julianne for some girlie chat in Battery Park before going to church and seeing some more friends!

So much love this Easter Sunday!

Westville East

March 31, 2010 · 5 Comments

I think breakfast/brunch is the prettiest thing to take pictures of. And maybe ice cream. Just look at this beaut.

Last weekend I had a girlie brunch with some of my favorite girlies at Westville East. One of my favorite things is brunch with the girls. We had to wait a little while and they came out with hot apple cider to warm us up! Probably the cutest touch, and it solidified the fact that we were going to keep waiting to get a table and not go somewhere else.

We were seated, looked at the menus, continued gabbing.

Stephanie put some sugar in her iced coffee.

MB and Melody wanted brussel sprouts and plantains. DElish.

And Megan got eggs and asparagus and mashed potatoes.

I really like Westville East. There’s always a line on weekends, but as I said earlier, if you’re lucky maybe you’ll get some hot apple cider. I must say that Stephanie and I both enjoyed our french toast. It was very doughy. I also was a huge fan of the mashed potatoes. Very good. I hope to have another girlie brunch soon.

In other news: three Germans are in my apartment for the week. Ha!

Good

March 8, 2010 · 5 Comments

Um, HELLO it was gorgeous this weekend. Look at me in my new Chloé shades wearing one of my spring jackets without a scarf. I was even wearing flats. How refreshing!

So last weekend it was snowy, snowy and this weekend was nothing but sunshiiiiine in the skies! I had to go into the office on Saturday, which was a bummer, so I feel like I only had one night and one day of the weekend but I definitely made the best of it. Yesterday I ran in the morning through Prospect Park. The lake was very blue and I was very happy. Spring is almost here! Hopefully this is not a tease.

Anyway, onto brunch:

I met up with my good friend Melissa after the both of us had very eventful weeks and we ended up at Good over in the Village. It seems to be a pretty good spot (no pun intended, seriously).

Melissa had the basil and goat cheese scramble:

I think that kind of looks gorgeous. This is what brunch is all about (besides mimosas of course – which we didn’t even get).

Also had some cheese grits that were a little spicy:

I’m more of a home fries girl myself, which is good because that’s what I got with my mushroom, broccoli, and ricotta salata omelet:

I think I’m growing up because I never used to like mushrooms. Also, this was the first time in my entire life I’ve ever ordered an omelet. Sometimes I think I had a weird upbringing because we never ate omelets, never watched the Sound of Music and never went skiing. I don’t know if those things have anything to do with each other besides the fact that they all came up in conversation yesterday. And apparently I like omelets. The ricotta was hiding underneath the omelet and that was a nice surprise.

So Good is pretty good. I already said that.

Afterwards, Melissa and I went somewhere that pretty much every New Yorker has an opinion about. And that includes me. One day I think I will post the reasons why I think I can call myself a New Yorker (in fact, I will do that this week!) and tomorrow I will let you know what our second destination was. Here’s a hint: I should have bought some milk.

Happy Monday!
