I apologize if you do not like oysters because I’ve been featuring them on City Mitten quite a lot lately. And what am I supposed to do? I work full-time for a seafood restaurant and I happen to be thinking about oysters for most of my day. Not to mention, it’s pretty much the only thing that sounds good all the time. If you’ve never tried them, I’m not going to make any promises, because not everyone likes them, but I think they are refreshing and delicious and if you’d like to try them, I’d love to be the one to take you there.

This is my sister’s friend Kelsey trying her first oyster. I don’t think she was *entirely* sold but I was a moron and only ordered enough for everyone to try two. What was I thinking!? They all taste different!
It was also Sambe’s birthday so she got an extra large pudding (did I mention yet that we were at the Mermaid Inn East Village?).

Love it. We had a super early dinner because 1) we didn’t have a reservation so I knew that was our best bet and 2) we were seeing Next to Normal afterward!

If you haven’t seen Next to Normal yet, I really really suggest that you do. I’ve seen it twice now and I just think it’s fantastic. So get some tix!
In other news, you got lots of my sister Samb this week and you might get more of her next week too because I’m headed to Detroit again this weekend for her real birthday party! I’m so excited to see my family. Who knows what we’ll be up to. :)

I told you we went somewhere else for dessert after Motorino. And Momofuku Milk Bar & Bakery it is. David Chang FTW, if you will.
The Milk Bar’s soft serve flavors change all the time. Cereal milk is a standard flavor and right now they also have blueberry muffin, cinnamon bun, and zucchini bread. Soft serve, people. Yes. Nora got zucchini bread and I got blueberry muffin and we both got toasted struesel as a topping and the key is they put it on the top AND the bottom. It’s fabulous and the way things should always be done. Always.
Matty over here got a cereal milk shake with cinnamon bun ice cream I believe:

That’s Matt’s shake face and this is Nora’s soft serve face:

And this picture I just like:

Momofuku Milk Bar & Bakery is known for their milks and soft serves but also for their cookies and cakes and pork buns. Yep! They have this most amazing chocolate chip cake that I was able to try back in the day when they sold it by the slice. Now you have to get the whole thing so I’ll have to wait for a special occasion with special people who will appreciate a cake from Momofuku.

Will it be you?

Motorino is NYC’s latest pizza obsession. Slice loves it. I tried to go a few weeks ago and the wait was too long. But I finally made it to the East Village location with some of my peeps and it was pretty good. This top pizza here is cremini and sweet sausage and we also had margherita (’cause you always have to try the margherita) and stracciatella: which was basil, olive oil, and sea salt. YUM!

Yes. It was all nice. There’s also a Motorino location in Brooklyn, so I’m going to have to check that out.
My pizza-shaped heart still beats for Grimaldi’s though. Just wish that wasn’t always the place with the longest line.
Motorino usually has tiramisu but the night we were there it didn’t set properly or something so we weren’t able to try that. Bummerzville! We went on Nora’s actual birthday and they were accommodating, we got chocolate soft-serve with a candle and they came out and sang happy birthday to her! It wasn’t tiramisu but it still was nice! We ended up getting a *real* dessert somewhere after that but I’m gonna leave that one for tomorrow. ;)

So after church on Sunday I told my friend Lucy that I had something to tell her and it was going to make her mad. Now Lucy is someone you can’t really imagine being mad, and even she had no idea what I could say that could anger her.
Until I told her where I went for a late-night bite on Friday. This Little Piggy Had Roast Beef. Lucy has tried to get me to go there more than once and I would whine because I’d heard bad reviews, so we never went there. Well, I happened to find myself there on Friday night after going to the Poetry Project and the only thing I had had for dinner was beer. I mean, what was I supposed to do? Haha. I was supposed to walk a few blocks for something that I did not want before but at that exact moment sounded like the only thing I ever needed. And it was.
So you can order your roast beef “This Way” or “That Way,” which are the names of the subs. They have more, but these were teh ones we wanted. The one at the top is a “This way,” with Cheez Whiz! And then…

That Way! With mozzarella and au jus! Absolutely delicious! And there were pickles! And we got amazing french fries!

So basically, don’t knock it until you try it. And sorry, Luce. Next time you wanna go, I won’t complain. :) Seriously, it hit the SPOT.
Other note: This Little Piggy was chock full of MEN after we got there. And us pretty ladies were eating our delicate sandwiches at the front counter in front of all of them. It was kind of hilarious.
Other note number two: Vinny, the guy at the counter, was awesome. He remembered our names on the way out, which gives them an automatic plus ten points for customer service. Way to go, Vinny!

This is me with one of my best girlie friends from college, Nora. And this picture reminds me of college. I love it. She’s been here this weekend and I currently have almost 300 pictures to go through to figure out what was the best of the best to put on City Mitten. It’s really been too much fun. We went to PDT on Saturday night with P and it was soooo much fun. Saturday was so perfect. PDT has the coolest cocktails (even if Nora and P are bigger fans of beer) and we had a table to ourselves towards the back so we had hilarious conversations pretty much the entire time. And I took two flash pictures before I got lelled at. I wouldn’t have taken the flash pictures at all had we not been in the back, but I figured I’d give it a shot. So that happened.
The final flash photo I took:

Yes, we ordered tater tots at approximately 1 a.m. We also ordered David Chang and Wiley dogs:

David Chang is THE Restaurant man in NYC so you’re pretty much gonna like anything with his name on it. This particular creation (right) is a deep-fried hot dog, wrapped in bacon, and covered in kimchi. The Wiley dog (left) had fried mayonnaise. Yep.
PDT is the ish. It’s a not-so-secret-but-still-secret bar and every time I take people, they are nothing but impressed. I don’t give away my *real* secrets, but PDT has a page on NY Mag (the comments are hilarious, btw) and a review in Time Out New York, so I’m not going to worry about it. :)

Omg. I am killing myself right now looking at this picture. Blurry or not, that pizza was good. Last weekend I went to Veloce Pizzeria with P (and B) and we split three pizzas. Clam, which was a bit dry, and a margherita, and a sausage; which were both delish. So get those. They were so good and we have leftovers and I wonder if P and B left them at the bar we went to afterward. Probably.
Anyway, Veloce is yummy. So now you know that. Some other things you should know:
I have had cereal for dinner every day this week. And by this week I mean since Sunday because Saturday was this here pizza. It’s getting old. But it’s okay cause my friend Nora comes into town today and I’ll be taking her to the best of the best for the entire weekend.
Second: I got a new camera! A Canon t1i and it is already so life-changing it sickens me that I have been dining and posting pictures with my old point-and-shoot. Now I just need to figure out all these crazy features, but basically, it’s gonna be good. And Nora has no idea what she’s getting herself into. :)
Third: I am obsessed with the new Miley Cyrus video.
Tomorrow’s Friday!

Happy Easter! Okay, that was yesterday, but all the same. So my Easter was great. Despite the fact that the Germans left me (lots more posts on their time here coming up!).
Easter is about a lot of things. Jesus, who rose on the third day. Peeps, which are made of sugar. And family, which is love. Family! So how nice was it for me to be able to spend my Easter with my aunt and uncle and some of my favorite cousins? Yeah, that’s right, other cousins: be jealous. Oh, and let’s not forget I got to spend it with cousin’s boyfriend, too. :)
We went to Frank which is kind of lovely. Here’s cousin Michelle with Auntie Joyce:

Unfortunately, Auntie Joyce was a little too absorbed in the ordering decisions to smile for this one. But Michelle is smiling pretty so I had to post it.
BTW I wanted to tell you that I always thought this restaurant was called “A Place to Eat” because of the sign that says that out front (and of which I mistakenly forgot to take a picture of) so no wonder I could never find it on Google! It’s called Frank!
Anyway, we got lots of food. Some highlights:

A tomato/mozzarella appetizer with mozzarella served a way I have definitely never seen before. As you can see it’s extremely gooey. And extremely good. Getting this again.
Gnocchi:

This was truly good. As well as the chicken and mashed potatoes. I love mashed potatoes:

And here is some of our table, crumbs and all:

Please note the lasagne verdi in front of me, for which there was only ONE left when we got there so of course I ordered it and of course everybody stole it from me. But I didn’t mind because I stole food from everyone else too. We’re a sharing and caring family. And my Uncle Doug wants everyone to know that although he typically doesn’t like lasagne, he thought this lasagne was the Best Ever. Probably because it was. So there you have it.
Basically this was a fabulous Easter because I got to spend it with some family and hear how they were doing as well as update them on new developments. After brunch, we went to Butterlane and I saw Anderson Cooper on our way there! Then we trolled around Tompkins Square Park with the baybeee. Then I met up with my lovely Julianne for some girlie chat in Battery Park before going to church and seeing some more friends!
So much love this Easter Sunday!

I think breakfast/brunch is the prettiest thing to take pictures of. And maybe ice cream. Just look at this beaut.
Last weekend I had a girlie brunch with some of my favorite girlies at Westville East. One of my favorite things is brunch with the girls. We had to wait a little while and they came out with hot apple cider to warm us up! Probably the cutest touch, and it solidified the fact that we were going to keep waiting to get a table and not go somewhere else.

We were seated, looked at the menus, continued gabbing.

Stephanie put some sugar in her iced coffee.

MB and Melody wanted brussel sprouts and plantains. DElish.

And Megan got eggs and asparagus and mashed potatoes.
I really like Westville East. There’s always a line on weekends, but as I said earlier, if you’re lucky maybe you’ll get some hot apple cider. I must say that Stephanie and I both enjoyed our french toast. It was very doughy. I also was a huge fan of the mashed potatoes. Very good. I hope to have another girlie brunch soon.
In other news: three Germans are in my apartment for the week. Ha!

This is the letter board at Terroir, my new favorite wine bar. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever had a favorite wine bar until now. Perhaps because I didn’t even know I liked wine until October 2008. True story. Tried Prosecco on a date and the story goes from there. Now I’m a red wine girl. It’s changed my life.

Terroir is on 12th street between 1st and A. It’s the same people who do Hearth and they really know their wines. I couldn’t tell you for the life of me what I had (okay, show me the menu and I probably can) but I know I enjoyed it. The food in there looked (and smelled) really good, too, so I’d like to go back there one day for that. So… who wants to go on a date?

I was the one who spelled “I love Lucy” with the magnetic letters, because Lucy was one of the friends I was with, and let’s be honest, it’s pretty B.A. to have a friend named Lucy.
Today I’m leaving NYC for a few days in Florida with my older sisby. And don’t worry, you know I’ll be posting from Grandpa’s house. :)

Do you know what this is? It’s one of those Indian restaurants on First Ave between 5th and 6th street. First of all, sixth street is nothing but Indian restaurants, but the few jam-packed next to each other on the small space on First Ave between 5th and 6th definitely take the cake. A man stands outside each restaurant and tries to convince you to come inside. “How many? How many?” What you can’t see in the picture above is that to the left of this man is another man, standing in front of another Indian restaurant that looks exactly the same and they are both asking the same thing. It’s hysterical.
I’m sure someone has a developed opinion to which of the Indian restaurants in this clump of Indian restaurants is better, but I’m a newbie here. And like many places in NYC, I’ve walked by it a million times. And I’ve often wondered who exactly eats there. I see all the gimmicky lights and think it can’t possibly be any good. In fact, when I agreed to go to Panna II for dinner last Saturday night, I had no idea that that was the place I had agreed to.
But guess what! I LOVED it! I didn’t even know I liked Indian food! But it is soooo goood:

I seriously have no idea what we ordered. Some chicken somethings. Some vegetable somethings. I know we ordered some cheese bread and some coconut bread which was Amazing. It was all amazing. And Panna II is BYOB, which is fun. We also did BYOD (bring your own dessert) cause my friends brought in a chocolate cake for me!
And when the Panna II people found out it was my birthday, they took the cake and five minutes later, this crazy “Happy Birthday” song came over the entire restaurant and the lights were flashing on and off and they brought out my cake with candles on it. It was insane. I cannot explain the birthday song to you, but if you know someone with a birthday coming up, you should take them to Panna II just for that experience. It was hilarious.

Do you see all these lights? It’s a whole other world inside Panna II. And I kind of love it.
