I apologize if you do not like oysters because I’ve been featuring them on City Mitten quite a lot lately. And what am I supposed to do? I work full-time for a seafood restaurant and I happen to be thinking about oysters for most of my day. Not to mention, it’s pretty much the only thing that sounds good all the time. If you’ve never tried them, I’m not going to make any promises, because not everyone likes them, but I think they are refreshing and delicious and if you’d like to try them, I’d love to be the one to take you there.

This is my sister’s friend Kelsey trying her first oyster. I don’t think she was *entirely* sold but I was a moron and only ordered enough for everyone to try two. What was I thinking!? They all taste different!
It was also Sambe’s birthday so she got an extra large pudding (did I mention yet that we were at the Mermaid Inn East Village?).

Love it. We had a super early dinner because 1) we didn’t have a reservation so I knew that was our best bet and 2) we were seeing Next to Normal afterward!

If you haven’t seen Next to Normal yet, I really really suggest that you do. I’ve seen it twice now and I just think it’s fantastic. So get some tix!
In other news, you got lots of my sister Samb this week and you might get more of her next week too because I’m headed to Detroit again this weekend for her real birthday party! I’m so excited to see my family. Who knows what we’ll be up to. :)

Somewhere along the way I got the idea in my head that I needed to try the Noho Star. The pear and walnut salad, specifically, when ended up being only okay. The best salad in NYC is still the all chopped up from Cowgirl. Oh, Cowgirl. But I took the girls to Noho Star when they were here so we could check it out, and my little sis ended up getting a BLT sandwich with a fried egg and avocado on it, which kind of shocked me. She’s not into food like I am and I thought for sure the fried egg would turn her off. But it didn’t, so apparently what I should have done was take her to Crifdogs for a real fried egg experience (on a hot dog)!

Anyway. The other girlies got chicken sandwiches or something. More exciting is that afterward we went to karaoke at Japas 38 and after that we went on a boat.

The boat ride was interesting. We danced a bit and then snuck our way up to the front of the boat for the prime spot when we pulled up to the Statue of Liberty, which was cool. And then we got very tired.

This is my sisby. Her nickname is Sambe (Som-bie). It’s a long story. She turned 21 last week so she came to New York. One of her favorite things to do when she visits is go to Red Mango. So we went there twice. I mean how can it not be one of your favorite things, anyway?

Mmmm. Here is Sambe and her friends starring down some Red Mango:

It was a great weekend. Hope she comes back soon.

I lurve Passion Pit. I lurve Governor’s Island. Let’s make that a combination. Okay!
Last night I kept moving with my Busiest Bee initiative (saw Next Fall the night before – amazing!) and took the good ol’ ferry over to Governor’s Island with my Missypie to see good ol’ Passion Pit. I saw them last year at Central Park with Phoenix, so I was more than happy to see them again.

I love outdoor shows and the weather last night was perfect. This picture with pretty lights is of Tokyo Police Club, who played before Passion Pit. Here’s a picture of Missy and I before we turned into Dancing Machines:

I assure you I was actually wearing something. Besides my glasses that everyone loves/hates. Last night the score was 2 loves and 0 hates.
And here’s my homeboy Michael Angelakos:

I have a feeling that he is just an excellent person. Probably because he reminds me of this excellent person I used to work with. And I also think he’s a cutie. He kept thanking us for coming to the show. It was the biggest show they have ever played and he couldn’t believe that we all took a ferry to an island to see them. Hilarious. And he said that they may be a band from Boston, but NYC made them. Duh.
Passion Pit is so fun. I danced lots, got some beer spilled on me, no big deal. Waited ten hours to get on a ferry on the way back. Not really. And the people in line were doing a sing-along anyway. Even included the Star-Spangled Banner for some reason. That’s talent. Passion Pit, you’ve got some pretty cool fans.
Well Summerzville is Funnerzville, my friends.

I love eggs benedict. I even like them when they are called “bagels benedict” because they are served on a bagel. I love homefries. I love brunch.
For any of those who know me in real life, or have been reading this here blog for a substantial period of time, you should know that I spend wayy too much time in an area called Long Island City, in Queens, because my two best boys live there. This past weekend was my third weekend in a row going there and sometimes I think if I was smart, I’d just move there, but I’m a Brooklyn girl at heart and home. Not to mention I’d like to keep Grand Central Station out of my daily commute.
Anyway, this is Kaitlin. She’s awesome and she’s lucky enough to live in P’s building. She also took us to brunch on at this new restaurant called Breadbox, which used to be an auto garage and is still smack dab next to a gas station:

P got salmon benedict and also this oatmeal which he says he put syrup on.

Really?
Breadbox was fun. The service was off. The food was good. I’d give it another shot except that for how much time I’ve spent in LIC, it’s amazing how little of their restaurants I’ve actually been to. Next!

Surprisingly enough, I have never written about Posto, one of my first favorite restaurants when I moved to the city. It was a block away from my first apartment (in StuyTown) and I have been there with many a’friend. And it’s definitely the first place I think of when I want a good Greek salad. In Detroit, you can get a Greek Salad at what seems like pretty much any restaurant in the city. When I moved here, I remember being shocked at how hard it was to find one on a menu (besides in Astoria, but how often do I feel like trekking out there?). So this one is pretty good. Lots of vegetables and a heap of feta, paired with olive oil and vinegar. I could eat in any day of the week. Oh, and they also have pizza:

We ordered two individual pizzas; one meatlovers (which I hate ordering, the word “meatlover” sounds so gross) and one fromaggio bianco (fresh ricotta, fresh mozzarella, spinach, and basil). I actually think my favorite here is the Meatball Classic, but we didn’t get it this time around. We did, however, get some bread pudding for dessert:

Cause that was necessary. The butter/sugar combination on the plate turned into a glaze that you could pick up with your fork. It’s all a little much. But it’s also a little good. And Posto is cute! You sit outside on picnic tables, which we snagged no problem, eating that day an old person’s dinner of 5 p.m. Score!

The New Amsterdam Market is back! And it’s way better than last year. Meats, seafood, breads, cheeses, chocolates and wine, as well as many other vendors dishing up some fabulous eats. Here’s some Mozzarella bread, which Laura, Chad, and I each bought for later. The problem is I have no idea which vendor that was.

Here are some apple turnovers that I kind of regret not buying. Looked like they had the perfect amount of sugar on top.
Something I did buy was the house cured ham sandwich from Marlow and Daughters with pulled pork, pickled relish, scape mayo, mild cilantro and fontina cheese:

Mmmm. I’m a fan of Marlow and Sons and this is the first thing I’ve had from Marlow and Daughters, their butcher shop just down the same street. Marlow is your friend.
We tried lots of chocolates:

The salted almond chocolate from Taza was my favorite. It has a kind of grainy texture and it rocks. Makes me wish it was Christmas and I have no idea why. Am I really thinking about stocking stuffers in June? I am so weird.
Now these bars blew my mind:

I couldn’t really figure out what exactly they were but they looked delectable and I somehow resisted
Finally we ended things with ice cream from The Bent Spoon.

I regret not taking home a pint of their sour cream and cherry ice cream. Sure do. Good thing the New Amsterdam Market will be back next month!

What happens when you have awesome friends? You do awesome things. Like get a group of ten people together on a Sunday afternoon to take a candy tour of the city. Missy Kayko, City Mitten Star. Get to know her. And sign up for her candy tours once she starts giving them to the general public. The top photo is of liquid Chocolate at The Chocolate Bar in the West Village. I had one a couple years ago when they were in the East Village, and it is good good good. The best version of chocolate milk money can buy.
I love the Chocolate Bar. I’ve bought candy bars there before for stocking stuffers because I love the packaging.

They have bars with monsters on them, RAWR!
Other places we went on the Candy Tour: Papabubble, Li-Lac Chocolates, The Mast Brothers Chocolate Factory, and of course Economy Candy!

Missy Pie! Economy Candy has all sorts of candies (duh) like homemade chocolate cookies, giant jawbreakers, and all kinds of old school treats:

Anybody got a boo boo that needs fixin’?
The only things I ended up buying was some dark chocolate non pariels from Li-Lac and also a little surprise somethin somethin for somebody from somewhere else. ;)

Is it ever too hot for mac and cheese? Maybe. But we’re not there yet. Maybe you’re reading this and looking at these pictures, and can’t imagine putting a spoonful of steaming noodles and gooey melted cheese in your mouth. But if you can, this post is for you.
I used to hate mac and cheese growing up. And by hate, I mean I refused to try it. Wow, have things changed! My friend Lucy’s mom and sister were in town last weekend and they took us to Little Giant on the LES for the earliest brunch I have ever participated in (10 a.m.!). I was thrilled when her mom ordered mac and cheese because that meant I could try it. And it had bacon in it, mmm…
My favorite mac and cheese used to be from Kitchenette, but the last time I was there they had changed their noodles from penne to elbow and it made me sad. My latest favorites are Poco, DuMont, or Westville, and my least favorite is always S’mac. Basically, I really like mac and cheese. Good thing it doesn’t clog your arteries at all!
Here’s my lovely Lucy. She always eats healthier than me.

Because we all know one of my other obsessions is French Toast. Geeze. And this one came with freaking ice cream, which I didn’t even realize until our server brought it out and I was like, “What is THAT?!”

As you can see, it’s never too hot for French Toast either. And now I’ll go have a heart attack and die.

It’s not every day you get to pretend that you’re hatching out of an egg. Or you’re turtle:

Or a prairie dog:

Or you get to play kissy with farm animals:

Prospect Park Zoo may be small, but it is good. Lots of birds and monkeys. We saw mommy and baby wallabies. And these guys:

Sea lions! We saw a feeding and they did tricks for us and there were barely any people there so you could see everything. They were so cute! All the zoo is missing is some penguins and they would be set.
Yeah, yeah, so no munchies on this City Mitten post, but don’t you worry because this weekend was packed. And HOT! I made the mistake of randomly walking across the Brooklyn Bridge after brunch one day and now I’m red, red, red. Stay tuned, because I assure you tomorrow will be delicious.
