Friday Night Lights

October 26, 2009 · 5 Comments

I love the weekend.

We went to Ulysses’ in the Financial District on Friday night. One of our friends in Chicago just got a new J-O-B so he and his girlfriend flew out here to celebrate. We tried all different kinds of beer: wheat beer, peach beer, raspberry beer, pear beer and (tis the season for) pumpkin beer. The pear was so good, my friend bought a case online the next day. Yep, online.

I am loving that all the bars are getting ready for Halloween with all their decorations. Ulysses had spiderwebs covering the entire ceiling, which made me even MORE excited for Halloween. Just gotta get my costume together!

Before Ulysses, we grabbed dinner at Tuk Tuk in Long Island City. I ordered the grilled shrimp and it was crazy pretty, as well as delicious.

I can’t believe for all the time I’ve spent in Long Island City, that I had never been here! The food is good, it’s cheap and they have really cool lights at the bar with cars and trucks inside.

It rained all night. Look, there’s a ghost!

We took a cab. Oh, but don’t tell anyone because there were five of us passengers and the legal limit is only four. :)

These boots are made for walking

October 16, 2009 · 1 Comment

redThis is not me. Obviously. I do not squirt water from a water bottle over a field in front of glorious mountains. This is a photo of a blonde girl in shorts and Hunter boots, which I need. My awesome black cowboy/rainboots are on the verge of death. It’s sad, really. Yesterday was awful outside. I am typically a fan of rain, but freezing rain + wind does not equal a happy camper me. Especially when, as I said, my boots are dying, which made my feetsies get a little wet. And cold. Goodbye, black cowboy/rainboots. You were so fab.

Tonight I’m driving to the Pocono Mountains with a bunch of women from Apostles Church. I’m a leeeetle concerned about the weather for the weekend. And the fact that I don’t yet own a pair of these boots. Wish me luck! Hopefully I’ll have some gorg pictures for you after the weekend. I’ve never been to the Poconos!

Rain and the Red Light District

I think this picture is sweet. Last night in Amsterdam there was a bit of a storm, and we didn’t have umbrellas so we were just going to run back to our room for the night but by the time we got back, it had stopped raining so we decided to turn around and go back out.

Then it was was quite the adventure. I roamed the Red Light District with my mom. How many people can say that? At first we were sort of confused; we saw the sex stores and sex museums, but we did not see sex for sale.

Until…

redlight

There they are, ladies and gents! Of course I didn’t take any real photos of them because they are actually people and not zoo animals, but I did want to post this little shot to show you that yes, there are women who work in Amsterdam as legit prostitutes and they do actually stand there in windows surrounded by red lights, beckoning to the people as they walk by. For real. My mom wanted to stand there and look at them but I just felt awkward giving them more than a glance. But I will tell you that from what I saw, most of them were pretty good looking! And they were everywhere! You’d be walking and all of a sudden you’d realize there are lights coming from the windows that are below the street level, too.

And as we walked down one street, we saw a man come out from one of the rooms. Awkward!

Oh, and here’s a nice little sign for a store that’s not really so “nice” on the inside. Well, I guess that depends on your definition.

loveyou

“I want dessert”

Time is flying! It’s already Saturday! Look at how dark it was on the Upper East Side along the East River on Thursday. I went on a little stroll with a very interesting boy. With that sky, we were lucky that it didn’t rain on us. Actually that might have been fun.

Washington Square Park looks really nice since it’s been remodeled. After our little stroll, we went to the village for some dessert. This is definitely the first time I’ve ever met a guy that wanted to order dessert first. Mom would be proud.

McDougal street is pretty interesting. Since I wasn’t an NYU kid (and I typically try to avoid them), I haven’t really spent a lot of time in that area. Maybe a night on Bleecker here and there, but when we were walking just a few blocks I already saw a few things I wanted to check out, like some really cute cafes and a crepe shop. Cute!

And can I just say you never know who you are going to meet in New York! Everyone has their own stories and you can never really assume too much about someone. I mean, I assume things about people all the time (especially if they tell me they live on the Upper East Side, haha) but in some cases, I couldn’t be more off. :)
